In a competitive job market, if you want to land the job, you must do everything you can to gain a competitive advantage. One way to do that is to research the companies you are interviewing with. This will give you a better understanding of their employment needs and position you to ask the right questions during the interview, which will go a long way to increasing your odds of landing the job.
Here are three ways you can interact with a company before your job interview to give you the competitive advantage in the interviewing process.
  1. Follow the company on social media – Like their Facebook page, follow them on Twitter, and check out their LinkedIn page. If company representatives publish to LinkedIn Pulse, read their posts. This will give you an idea of how the company markets itself and interacts with customers outside of the business transaction. You'll get a better feel for the brand, which should spark some questions to ask about the position you are interviewing for.
  2. Read their blog – Company blogs are full of useful information for job candidates. This is where companies brag about their accomplishments, feature employees, and sometimes their customers, as well as their products. Get to know the company through its blog.
  3. Google them - Read the latest news about them including press releases on their website. Also, if you Google the company, you'll see what others are saying about them. Are they getting good press or bad? Are there customer reviews that tell you something about how they conduct business? What do their competitors say? A search can reveal much more about a company than their internal communications will ever reveal, but be careful that you don't shoot yourself in the foot. At the very least, you might find you aren't the right candidate for that job after all.
One of the best ways to prepare for a job interview is to research the company. The more you know before you interview with them, the better your chances of landing the job you want.
