Most professionals know that having a presence on LinkedIn is a must these days because it is the social media platform of choice for businesses and professionals. They know that it is important to complete their profile, sprinkling relevant keywords in it, so that recruiters and hiring managers can find them. But many do not really know and understand the power of the social media platform. If you are among the professionals who do not know and understand the functionalities of LinkedIn, there are a couple of ways you can use the social media platform, if you are looking for a job, managing your career, simply looking to build your brand, or looking for leads for your small business – ways that most professionals are not using it. Two additional ways you should be using LinkedIn is publishing on their platform and creating a LinkedIn group. These two techniques will allow you to build authority on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn Publishing Platform: In previous blog posts, you have learned that it is important to have a personal website with a blog to help you build your brand and authority. But publishing on LinkedIn extends your reach, and if your article is popular, the social media platform will include it in their Pulse newsletter, which further extends your reach. When you log into the Home page of LinkedIn, you will see three options close to the top of the page, “Share an update,” “Upload a photo,” and “Publish a post.” Select the option, “Publish a post,” and it is best if you write the post first, edit it, then copy and paste to LinkedIn.

“Writing on LinkedIn is a great way to display your professional perspective, which can help your career and grow your personal brand…

Creating content is an easy thing. Creating interesting content that is read by millions of people is another thing. It’s not what you know, but who you know.

While creating high-quality and timely posts are most encouraged, LinkedIn also looks for authentic voices, concrete advice, focused writing and opinionated pieces that aren’t too obscene or unprofessional. Joining and participating in groups is also encouraged.”

Create a LinkedIn Group: There is a LinkedIn Group for virtually any topic, but you shouldn’t let that stop you from creating your own group. To build your personal brand, and create authority, create a group for your niche, but make sure that you have at least 500 connections because you want to invite people to join your group and not everyone will accept. Before you actually create the group on LinkedIn, invest some time in creating your ideal employer or prospect profile, and the type of information that would add value to their lives – interesting and meaningful content. Find credible sources for articles that your prospects would appreciate, and add it to a Feedly account, so the information is in one spot. Think of a name for your group, one that says what the group is about.

After you have created the ideal profile, find credible content sources, and have a name for your group, it’s time to create your group. At the top of your LinkedIn homepage, choose Interests, then under the list of groups you belong to, just to the right, click on Create a group and fill out the required information. Now that’s the easy part, based on the ideal profile(s) that you created, do a LinkedIn search to find people who fit that profile, then individually, invite them to join your group, emphasizing the value and benefits of joining.

Today, to stand apart from the crowd, requires that you do the unexpected. Right now, publishing on LinkedIn and creating a LinkedIn group, are two ways to do that, in addition to building authority.
