Simple Ways to Become More Productive at Work

Although it sounds cliché, with flattened organizational structures, professionals are expected to accomplish a lot more with less resources. There are times when one person is doing the work of three people. Without having to work 80 hours a week, how can someone keep up with the pace of work? There are some simple ways to become more productive at work, and some of them are easier to implement than others.

  1. Each night, before you go to bed (or first thing in the morning), prepare your to-do list for the next day, and only include the tasks and activities that you MUST accomplish for the day, and list them in order of priority. During the work day, focus only on what you have to do for the day, and focus only on one activity at a time. Take the time to measure your accomplishments and not how long it takes you to complete tasks. At the end of the day, review how well you did, which gives you insights into how much you can accomplish in a day.
  2. A great way to find time to do the things that matter to you is to keep a time log for a month. Record how you spend your time each hour, every day. At the end of each week, review the entries in your log. You may discover that how you think you spend your time, is very different from the reality. Your discovery will allow you to see where you are wasting your time, which allows you to use the time more productively. This review will also enable you to identify repetitive tasks. Can you create a template for any of the tasks that you complete all the time? Can you streamline these repetitive tasks by creating a checklist?
  3. A great productivity tip is to arise an hour earlier, but do this only if you are oversleeping. The most successful people arise early in the morning and that’s one of the reasons they accomplish so much in their lives. Another productivity tip that most people would not think of, is simply to drink more water each day. If your body is not fully hydrated, you will feel very sluggish, which makes it very difficult to focus on tasks you need to complete.
  4. Exercise and eat healthy because you will have more energy to work on your goals and activities. Lean protein, fruits, nuts, seeds and vegetables are always great choices. Get a pedometer to ensure that you are taking at least 10,000 steps each day.
  5. You may know this already, but there are many productivity apps for the iPhone and Android that you can use to get more done in any given day. Read 50+ Apps to Make You More Productive to discover which ones are best for you.
