Burnout: How to Recognize and Prevent It During Job Search

Burnout is often referred to as the “silent condition” because it is difficult to detect – it is not top-of-mind for most people. And it isn’t something that the typical job seeker is concerned about. The job search process can be very stressful, especially if the job seeker is not having much luck securing interviews, or even discovering the right jobs. If a job seeker is experiencing high levels of stress, which remains unchecked, it can develop into burnout.
Ways That Burnout Manifests Itself

1. Decreased satisfaction with the search process.

2. Lower productivity.

3. Increased personal conflicts with others.

4. Reduced commitment to the job search.

5. Increased desire to disengage from networking.

Determine if You are Suffering from Burnout During Job Search

If you suspect that you may be suffering from burnout, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do you dread looking for work each day?

2. Have you lost the “fire in your belly” for the job search?

3. Do you snap at others, or get easily irritated, for no reason, or for the simplest things?

4. Do you feel disengaged from your network?

5. Do you feel emotionally and physically drained?

6. Are you getting less callbacks/interviews than you should?

7. Do you always feel like you lack the proper tools and resources to perform your search adequately?

8. Do you feel like there is always more work to do than time to do it?

If you answered yes to all of the questions or most of them you could be suffering from burnout.
Addressing or Coping With Burnout

A common way to prevent/cope with burnout during the job search process is to regularly speak to someone who you trust about what you are experiencing during the search process. It is also helpful to speak to others who are going through the job search process as well to share experiences. Whenever you are feeling overwhelmed or feeling like you have lost control of the job search process, take a break – go for a walk, or perform an activity that you enjoy. Performing a task that you enjoy reengages you and is a simple way of keeping burnout at bay. Searching for a new job doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
