Creating a Personal Website on WordPress
The WordPress platform is very popular and the industry standard these days for creating websites. The days when organizations, or even individuals, paid designers large amounts of money to design a simple website are long gone. So it makes sense to use the WordPress platform to create your personal website since there are countless templates to simplify the process for you. Additionally, a personal website is a simple interface to use to showcase your knowledge, skills and abilities to help you land a new job in record time. And the good news is that you do not have to be a skilled webmaster to build a professional looking website, which gives you more options than Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. To create your personal website, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Content for Website

The first post in the series above includes all the pages you have to create for your personal website. Please read the post if you haven’t done so already, then create the content for all the pages that you will have on the site. In terms of having a blog on the site, brainstorm ideas for blog posts that will demonstrate your expertise and authority in your field of interests. To start the process, think about issues that are plaguing the industry that you know how to solve. Who are the experts in the field who are good at trendspotting? Schedule an interview with them then transcribe interview, and you can have a question and answer blog post. The topics you choose should be of interest to prospective employers because one of the main reasons for having a personal website is to encourage employers to hire you.
After you have identified relevant topics to blog about, schedule some time to write 12 blogs posts. Decide on the frequency to post the articles. When you have performed the next two steps to create your personal website, based on the frequency you decide to post, schedule the posts on the WordPress platform. Inside the WordPress Dashboard, on the left hand side, hover your mouse over “Post”, select Add New, then add your article in the space provided.
Step 2: Secure Domain Name & Website Hosting Service
Think of your domain name as the name of your website, and as a job seeker, it is best if you use your name. Although WordPress allows you to build free websites where you do not have to pay for a domain name or hosting service, it is best to go with a paid option. The difference in options is that if you choose the free option, the address of your personal website would be http://www.johndoe.wordpress.com, while with the paid option it would be http://www.johndoe.com. Additionally, when you go with the paid option, you can use plugins – web applications – to extend the functionally of the site, making it more user-friendly.
Domain names are registered on a first-come-first-serve basis, so if your name is already taken, you have to get creative, while remaining professional. You can use a service such as Go Daddy to register your domain name and host your personal website. You can buy your domain name for about $10 which you renew yearly, and hosting can range from $10 a year upwards. Base your decision on whether you want a website for the long haul and not solely for job search purposes. The reality is that there are many professionals who have a personal website, which they maintain to build influence and authority. And the good thing is that when they change jobs, the website remains with them because they own it.
Step 3: WordPress Installation
This may sound complicated and daunting, but it really isn’t. Most of the services that provide domain and hosting, allow you to install WordPress with one click. In WordPress you can select from a variety of themes. You can choose one of the free themes there, or you can choose one of the 35 themes mentioned in Are You Looking for a Job – Do You Need a Personal Website?
In WordPress, create pages for your content by hovering your mouse over the “Pages” option on the left hand side of your computer, then click on Add New. Create the Pages recommended in the first post in this series. WordPress is easy to use so you can play around and change the look of your site. If you see yourself keeping a personal website for a long time, you may want to purchase a theme from Copyblogger. The benefit of doing that is once you purchase a theme from them, they will automatically update it for you to keep abreast of new internet technologies. Whichever theme option you choose, make sure that it is mobile friendly.
