Business Challenge: How do we ensure a successful succession plan and increase our pool of leader candidates?

Prompted by a mandate from its Board of Directors, this regional U.S. power and energy company needed to institute a replacement and succession-mapping process for its senior leadership positions. The company found itself with not only highly tenured leaders nearing retirement, but a number of potential successors with many more years behind them than in front of them as well. Right Management developed competency models for the company’s six vice president roles, incorporating a set of core competencies for all VP positions as well as additional competencies specific to each role. Using these new models, we designed a comprehensive psychological assessment process for 30 potential successors to evaluate their viability as candidates, and created development plans to ensure their readiness. Each potential leader received a detailed report and individual feedback from our consultants to help prepare for the development planning process. We also provide the client with reliable assessment data that gives insights into the relative strengths and development issues for individuals in the succession pool, enabling senior leaders to make effective talent decisions quickly.
